ZAMORA, Spain – July 3, 2025 — Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has reportedly died in a car accident in Spain, aged 28.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca and confirmed by state broadcaster TVE, the Portuguese international was involved in a fatal crash near Zamora, close to the border with Portugal, in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Local firefighters responded to the scene alongside the Traffic Civil Guard, Zamora’s Provincial Fire Brigade, and emergency medical services, as reported by multiple outlets, including Zamora24Horas.
Jota was reportedly travelling with his brother André, a player for Penafiel, who also died in the crash. The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. local time.
The news comes just two weeks after Jota married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, with whom he shares three children.
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and had become a key figure at the club and for the Portugal national team.
Liverpool FC has not yet released an official statement.
