On Thursday, Kenyans march to the streets in protest against the proposed finance bill 2024. The bill whose theme is “Sustaining Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda for Economic Recovery and Improved Livelihoods” has come under fire for the outrageous propositions contained in it. What are the highlights of Finance Bill 2024?
The Finance Bill 2024 proposes the introduction of a new tax framework that is set to touch on various sectors. A notable proposal that has received wide rejection is the introduction of motor vehicle tax at a rate of 2.5% of the value of the vehicle with the minimum being KES 5,000 and the maximum being KES 100,000. Many Kenyans have elicited different reactions on this bill with the majority seeking a complete rejection of the entire bill. Some are saying that the bill should be rejected as is and not amended in parliament.
What happens next?
Members of Parliament are currently debating on the bill and are set to vote on whether the bill passes or not on Thursday June 27th 2024. Gen Z’s and Millenials have decided they will not allow the bill to be passed and have gone to social media such as X to push the hashtag #rejectfinancebill2024.
They are marching to the streets across the nation to make their voices heard. Notable areas where residents have come out in their numbers to seek rejection of this bill include Nairobi CBD, Nakuru CBD, Kisumu CBD and Mombasa as well as Nyeri.
In Nairobi CBD, there is a heavy police presence across streets such as Parliament Rd, Kenyatta Avenue and even at Jevanjee Gardens. But Kenyans are not and will not be scared as you will see in the videos below.
