“In Onana We Trust”: Erik Ten Hag’s Defiant Defense of Onana Backed by Stats

In the midst of criticism surrounding Andre Onana’s performances for Manchester United, manager Erik ten Hag has come to the defense of the Cameroonian goalkeeper, boldly declaring him the “second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League.” Onana, who joined the Red Devils from Inter during the summer transfer window, has faced scrutiny for errors leading to goals, notably during Wednesday’s 3-3 draw against Galatasaray in the Champions League.

Ten Hag, however, remained steadfast in his support, pointing to statistical analysis to justify Onana’s place as the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League. The metric in question is expected goals prevented, where Onana ranks second with 3.67 goals prevented this season, just behind Luton’s Thomas Kaminski.

Despite Onana’s high ranking in expected goals prevented, he leads the pack in errors leading to shots in the Champions League, a concerning statistic that has raised eyebrows among critics. Ten Hag acknowledged these mistakes but emphasized Onana’s overall strong performance over the first five months of the season.

“He’s doing well. Also, he knows that in the Champions League he makes some mistakes, but all over you see the first five months he is doing particularly well,” commented Ten Hag. “He is a strong character, he is a personality, and he will deal with it.”

As Manchester United prepares for their upcoming clash against Newcastle, the spotlight remains on Onana, who faces both criticism and support. The manager’s unwavering belief in the goalkeeper, backed by statistical evidence, adds an intriguing layer to the narrative surrounding Onana’s role at Old Trafford.
